Gartner predicts that by 2018, 70 percent of mobile professionals will conduct their work on personal smart devices, through both formal and informal experiences. So what does that mean for those focused on training this mobile-enabled, always-on-the-go workforce? At Raytheon Professional Services (RPS), we believe there is a massive opportunity to use new mobile technology to create more powerful learning solutions that are custom-made not only for mobile devices but for the pervasive learning needs of the mobile workforce.
To capitalize on new learning technologies, and to allow for the delivery and tracking of both formal and informal learning experiences through these technologies, a new standard in learning technology has been developed. It’s called the Experience API or xAPI, or even the “TinCan” API for the code name it was given during development (“API” stands for “application programming interface”).
The xAPI framework helps learning professionals develop training courses based on how people like to learn — including mobile apps, games, instructional videos, social media, informal activities and simulated environments.
So why should you develop your training to be compatible with the Experience API standard? Here are five reasons:
- It makes it easier for workers to learn in “chunks” or focused learning bytes; permitting them to learn at the speed of need
- Includes more options to provide adaptive learning, and customizable courses to meet learning preferences and needs
- Adds innovation to programs with social learning, gamification, and mobile apps
- Integrates tracking and accountability for all learning activities experienced by the learner
- Improves overall retention rates when combined with follow up evaluations and exercises
