Russ O’Brien

Executive Director, North American Operations Raytheon Professional Services

Russ O’Brien is executive director of North American operations of Raytheon Professional Services LLC (RPS), a subsidiary of Raytheon Company. O’Brien joined RPS in 1998 as the senior program manager of the Service Technical Learning program for the U.S.-based automotive business. Since then, O’Brien has assumed oversight of program management for all North American business, leadership of the North American curriculum development center of excellence and management of the global technology office, which is responsible for one of the world’s largest learning management systems.

O’Brien began his career with Raytheon more than 23 years ago as an engineering intern with Hughes Training, Inc., a legacy company of Raytheon. His systems engineering background, coupled with his drive for delivering operational excellence and creating innovative business solutions for customers, enabled him to steadily assume roles of increasing responsibility. O’Brien has led major initiatives in some of Hughes and Raytheon’s most challenging training programs, including the V22 operational flight trainer, the B2 Cockpit Procedures Trainer, the F-16 Unit Training Devices and the General Motors Service Technical College.

A graduate of Raytheon’s Strategic Leadership Program and its Business Leadership Program, O’Brien is considered one of RPS’ top business leaders and one of Raytheon’s strongest program managers. Under his leadership, RPS has partnered with customers to develop the Architect methodology of learning media selection, resulting in higher value blended learning solutions. He has also successfully applied his solid technology background to the creation of high-fidelity learning experiences that include real-time simulations.

Under O’Brien’s leadership, RPS has earned several awards for client programs from the American Society for Training & Development, Bersin & Associates, Brandon Hall, Frost & Sullivan, Chief Learning Officer magazine and Workforce Management magazine. Commenting on one of these client programs, training industry analyst Josh Bersin wrote, “This [General Motors] program should be studied by every learning executive. The program is incredibly ambitious and touches one of the most business-critical elements in the GM business model. Its success is a testimony to the value of carefully honed best practices for program analysis, design, implementation and management.”

In 2006, O’Brien received the President’s Award from Raytheon Technical Services Company. The award recognizes O’Brien’s consistent demonstration of performance excellence and client focus.

O’Brien earned his bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering from California Polytechnic, Pomona. O’Brien is a qualified Raytheon Six Sigma™ Specialist.
