How IT and Telecoms are Modernising Learning to Deliver Results

Insights from the Towards Maturity 2015 Sector Benchmark Report

As technology continues to advance and integrate as a primary component of today’s workforce, we at Raytheon Professional Services delved into how modern learning strategies are being utilised, specifically within the IT and Telecoms sector. Our study in conjunction with Towards Maturity entitled, ‘Insights to help you Modernise Learning and Deliver Results,’ was designed to effectively explore how the IT and Telecoms sectors are delivering results and how they can overcome some of the remaining barriers to change. The following insights, taken directly from our research, will help L&D professionals within the IT and Telecoms sector better adapt learning strategies to improve bottom line results.

100 percent of respondents in IT and Telecoms are expected to be using mobile technologies by 2016

One key component of our study reveals modern, technology-driven learning has arrived and is here to stay. Within IT and Telecoms, the early adoption of mobile learning ranked very high, with usage up from 62 percent in 2011 to 75 percent in 2014. It’s also expected that all respondents will be using some form of mobile technology to boost learning and development by next year. Mobile technologies help IT and Telecoms organisations to more efficiently roll out new products and processes, advance the induction process and improve staff retention. Subsequently, those organisations who have already implemented mobile learning in the workplace are seeing a direct positive impact on productivity, knowledge sharing and employee satisfaction.

Three in four organisations expect to increase the proportion of technology training budget spend

The driving factor for such aggressive adoption of mobile-enabled learning within this sector is the ambition to deliver tangible business results from these learning programmes. To boost such results, the way in which formal programmes are designed and delivered is changing. 40 percent of formal learning has been e-enabled and 76 percent of employees currently utilise online learning in IT and telecoms. Additionally, organisations are building a learning culture by supporting learning at the point of need and integrating learning and talent. With such changes taking place within this sector, it makes sense that IT and Telecoms reports an above average investment in modern learning technologies, making up 28 percent of the overall training budget versus the 19 percent average. According to our research, strong and worthwhile investments are being made with three out of four organisations within the sector planning to increase the proportion spent on such technologies.

The IT and Telecoms sector reports more barriers to technology-enabled learning than most

Even though investments and success rates are high in certain areas, the IT and Telecoms sector seems to face more barriers than most others when it comes to technology-enabled learning strategies. Cost remains the greatest barrier, with 86 percent concerned about the cost of setup, development and maintenance. Another top challenge to technology-enabled learning and development for this sector is the notion of e-learning seeming too generic and not sufficiently tailored to employees’ needs. Most surprisingly, social learning is not yet embedded into the learning culture of IT and Telecoms organisations. Almost half report that their organisation’s culture is still holding back development in this area, and seven out of ten organisations are concerned about issues with user safety and identity.

In order to face some of these challenges, the following strategies from the Sector Benchmark Report are important for IT and Telecoms to consider. Several activity areas emerge where the sector might take action to see significant improvement in performance and results.

The 2015 Sector Benchmark Report on IT and Telecoms was compiled through telephone interviews and online surveys with 53 IT and telecommunications companies from primarily the UK, but also across Europe, that completed the 2014 -2015 benchmark research.
