Micro-learning is hot!
Creating smaller nuggets of learning information has been a hot trend over the past couple years. In a recent Training Industry research survey, the majority of organizations, 60%, said they believe micro-learning can improve the efficiency and application of their training initiatives. Companies are developing this method of learning with both great success and lots of room for improvement.
Where do I put these things?
In our experience developing and deploying micro-learning for clients across many industries, a best practice for design is to have your learners be no more than two clicks away from the needed learning.
The learning asset should be in a common format that can be displayed through a web browser and can also be downloaded to the user if needed. The most generally acceptable format that we have seen is “pdf” with some clients also utilizing interactive PDFs when their network systems will allow. XML and HTML formats can also be very effective but downloading is not as straight forward. Some companies have utilized content management systems like SharePoint and others have implemented web content servers with success. Others have added these small assets into the LMS. Where you should place your micro-learning will depend upon learner access and what types of reporting is needed.
What? You now need usage reports?
Now that you’ve left the “SCORM course reservation”, you need to think differently when it comes to reporting on micro-learning usage. What is available to you will depend upon your learning infrastructure and how you’ve created your micro-learning assets. If all you are looking for is “number of times accessed”, “when”, “from where” you can get this information by reporting off web site web trends. Getting to “who” requires integration with single sign on to capture user information.
Finally, understanding how they reviewed the asset, what they clicked or viewed or checked, requires a deeper integration – normally a good candidate for xAPI / LRS use. Additional metadata tagging information on the asset as well as wrapping the learning asset with an xAPI wrapper could also be needed, depending upon the level of reporting that is needed.

Our recent research survey revealed that the criteria that organizations have when selecting a training provider for micro-learning solutions are as follows:
- The quality of their diagnostics, analysis and reporting
- The ability to recommend and provide technology integration
These are key requirements for your short term and long term success in using these new learning assets. As long as you have a good vision for where you want to go, a specific area in the organization to implement micro-learning and what high level reporting you will need, you will have the start of a good approach to implement this new type of learning asset.
