Our takeaways from ATD 2015, MLearnCon and Performance Support Symposium

Our team at Raytheon Professional Services (RPS) has been busy traveling over the past few months, frequently attending conferences where we engaged with and learned alongside industry leaders. The latest string of events included ATD’s International Conference and Exposition, MLearnCon and Performance Support Symposium. The topics and discussions covered were numerous – some old some new. Here we offer our key takeaways from these events for those who were unable to attend:

ATD 2015 International Conference and Exposition
This year’s event, which took place May 17-20 in Orlando, Florida, highlighted major topics within the training and development industry, including career development, training delivery, leadership, learning measurement and analytics. RPS’s Yvon Dalat, presented to attendees on how to best drive workforce and business performance with analytics, technology and innovation. Yvon emphasized the importance of using data and technology to fuel better performance in your organization, including:

  • Innovative learning approaches: Approaches of the past are not effective, and are instead creating frustration. New learning methods such as gamification help create engaging programs for the learner
  • Combatting the forgetting curve: Through simulation, managed mobile learning, augmented and virtual reality, organizations can offer ongoing training programs through platforms employees already utilize in their non-working lives;
  • It begins with analytics and ends with analytics: The road to performance in your organization starts with an impact model and performance baseline and, through dynamic training methods, can be facilitated and measured for efficiency and effectiveness.

MLearnCon and Performance Support Symposium
ELearning Guild’s MLearnCon and Performance Support Symposium took place simultaneously June 8-10 in Austin, Texas where attendees discussed how to best incorporate mobile technologies into training programs and optimize performance support as these technologies advance in today’s workforce. Among the presentations, RPS’s own Michael Nemeth, showcased how to best drive on-the-job performance with mobile learning. Our RPS team also reflected upon the three takeaways that best convey the need to implement mobile strategies to help boost performance support:

  • Effective learning takes place over time; real learning doesn’t usually occur in one-time events;
  • Learning within the workflow is most effective, as it provides relevance, context and urgency while including real consequences and failures;
  • Advancements in mobile devices have increased availability and accessibility that enable employers and learning leaders to support employees at the moment of application within the workflow in an easier and more effective way than ever before;
  • Effective blended learning solutions and learning ecosystems are those fueled by business performance and learner data, providing insights to improve employee performance. These insights help inform decisions on prescriptive learning events to better shape employee performance as part of an overall learning strategy.

After attending ATD 2015, MLearnCon and Performance Support Symposium it is clear there is a shift taking place in the training and development industry, one that is needed to stay in sync with the needs of today’s modern workforce. The takeaways mentioned above are a good reminder that training programs are not “one size fits all.” A strategically developed, blended approach to training and development programs is required to shape your organization to fit best with how employees learn today.
